Heart ailments are the leading cause of death globally, with millions of people succumbing to the disease. Oxymed strives to treat heart diseases swiftly and promote faster recovery using non-invasive methods like EECP.

What is EECP?

EECP

EECP is an approved treatment method by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to cure coronary artery diseases and also to manage refractory angina. This treatment offers relief from anginal pain, improves breathlessness, and enhances blood flow. This is a non-surgical, safe, and affordable proven treatment method.

The treatment uses advanced medical equipment for the treatment of heart failure and refractory angina. It also acts as a passive exercise to improve blood flow to the brain, and studies show that EECP has positive effects on patients with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's' disease. Furthermore, medical problems like high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, diabetic neuropathy, and kidney issues can also be treated by EECP.

How’s it done?

An electronically controllable air pressure valve is attached to the patient’s calves, thighs, and bottom. The stimulation of the blood supply to the heart is due to the sequential inflation and deflation of the valves that create blood flow pressure in the body.

Our doctors at Oxymed will first conduct a thorough analysis of your health and body and schedule the treatment when you are ready. The treatment takes place over 35 one-hour sessions, five times per week, over seven weeks.

For the treatment, the patient will be asked to lie on the bed, and pneumatic cuffs will be tied around the limbs. The cuffs around the calves, thighs, and upper thighs energize the blood vessels and initiate the curing process. Then the sequential inflation and deflation of the valves take place, creating blood flow pressure in the body.

To measure the heart constantly, an ECG machine is connected to an EECP control panel. There are two phases in the procedure: the systole phase and the diastole phase.

  1. The calves, thighs, and upper thighs are inflated with air in a predetermined sequence, during the diastolic phase.
  2.  In the systolic phase, the air pressure is released.

This process continues during the periods of therapy, with our doctors at Oxymed continuously monitoring the process.

Being a non-invasive therapy, side effects are usually minor, and it reduces the need for medication.

Mechanisms Involved in EECP Therapy

EECP exerts its therapeutic effects through several mechanisms:

Increased Diastolic Filling

By inflating cuffs during diastole, EECP boosts arterial pressure, enhancing coronary blood flow, and ensuring efficient oxygen delivery to the heart muscle.

Reduced Afterload

EECP decreases peripheral resistance, lowering afterload and allowing the heart to work more efficiently.

Improved Coronary Blood Flow

EECP stimulates the growth and dilation of collateral vessels, providing alternative routes for blood flow and reducing the ischemic burden on the heart.

Collateral Vessel Growth

EECP triggers the release of nitric oxide, promoting the development of new collateral vessels, and further improving blood flow to the heart.

Benefits of EECP Therapy

Benefits of EECP Therapy

  1. It is a non-invasive treatment.
  2. Patients experience fewer symptoms of angina.
  3. Enhances cardiovascular function and endurance
  4. Reduced need for medications
  5. Enhances quality of life
  6. Reduces anxiety and depression and increases energy levels.
  7. Stimulates the growth of natural bypass vessels, improving blood flow to the heart.

Additionally, EECP can be seamlessly integrated with existing therapies.

  1. EECP can be combined with cardiac rehab to benefit patients with heart failure.
  2. Beneficial for incomplete revascularization and non-ideal candidates.

What are the diseases treated by EECP?

Although used for cardiac ailments, EECP can be effectively incorporated for various medical problems, including

  1. Angina
  2. Kidney Failure
  3. Chronic Fatigue
  4. Erectile dysfunction
  5. Alzheimer's disease
  6. Parkinson’s Disease
  7. Diabetic Neuropathy
  8. Congestive heart failure
  9. Restless leg syndrome

Who can receive EECP treatment?

EECP is suitable for patients with,

  1. Stable angina, refractory angina, and incomplete revascularization patients.
  2. Diagnostic confirmation of CAD is required before EECP consideration.
  3. Assess medical history, symptoms, and cardiovascular health to determine eligibility.

Importance of EECP

In angina, many studies from different institutes show EECP as useful for treating Chronic Stable Angina (CSA). In random trials, it was revealed that EECP significantly improved both the symptoms of angina and exercise tolerance in patients with CAD. It enhances the quality of a patient’s life when compared to placebo therapy.

In congestive Heart Failure

EECP increases pressure in the arteries by affecting the systole and diastole functions. The increased pressure leads to the opening of the blockage or congestion between the arteries. This process ensures smooth blood flow. This intervention is a non-surgical method of treating heart attack patients in cases of emergencies.

In Hypertension

A study revealed that patients who received EECP therapy had a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure. They had no record or effect on diastolic blood pressure or heart rate. This effect improves hypertension in patients.

In Non-Cardiac Condition

Other than cardiac issues, EECP treatment can be beneficial for patients suffering from Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), Erectile Dysfunction (ED), Hepatorenal Syndrome (HRS), Syndrome X, and Retinal Artery Occlusion.

Safety Profile of EECP

  • Non-invasive therapy with low risk.
  • No surgery or medication is required.
  • Well-established safety record, and minimal side effects.
  • Comfortable procedure with no significant discomfort or downtime.
  • Suitable for a wide range of patients, including those ineligible for invasive procedures.

Our Evidence-Based Research

Dr. Sama Akber conducted a study to investigate the impact of enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) on left ventricular (LV) function, measured through strain analysis. The research focused on patients with refractory angina and heart failure symptoms.

For which, he was awarded for his groundbreaking research on the effect of EECP on heart failure at the CSI 4th National Heart Failure Conference.
