EECP (Enhanced External Counter-Pulsation) is an approved treatment method by the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to cure Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) & also to manage refractory angina. It uses three sets of pneumatic cuffs controlled by an electronic mechanism that sequentially inflates and deflates to impact on body blood flow, systole-diastole function.

In Angina:

There are many studies from different institutes showing EECP is useful for treating Chronic Stable Angina (CSA). If we conduct a random trial, it will reveal that EECP significantly improved both the symptom of angina & exercise tolerance in patients with CAD. It also enhances the quality of a patient’s life as compared to placebo therapy.

In Congestive Heart Failure:

EECP increases pressure in the arteries by affecting the systole & diastole function. This may lead to open the blockage/ congestion between arteries to ensure a smooth flow of blood. Though this is not an approved method of treating the heart attack patient still being a non-surgical method, it can be a way to treat the patient in the course of an emergency.

In Hypertension:

A general study revealed that patients receiving EECP therapy had a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure after the completion of the treatment with no record & effect on diastolic blood pressure /heart rate. Thus improves the patient’s condition if they have hypertension.

In Non-Cardiac Condition:

Other than the cardiac issues EECP treatment can be beneficial for patients suffering from restless legs syndrome (RLS), erectile dysfunction (ED), and Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), Syndrome X, Retinal artery occlusion.

Though it is not approved by FDA, the therapy was proven effects on transdermal oxygen absorption and concentration of moving RBC and considerably reduced transdermal carbon dioxide pressure and velocity of blood cells in healthy subjects probably due to peripheral vasodilatation.

Conclusion :

From the above study, we can say that there is an essential role of EECP treatment as a non-surgical treatment for so many cardiac dysfunctional issues. Though the treatment concept has some criticism, still the modification in the coming days will remove this shortcoming.
